Biscuit 6 - Abba Medley (LP Verson) - Stars on 45

So I've completely given up with the days idea - I've been very busy and at the moment I'm not certain on what my routine is going to become, so I'm going to just start numbering the entries instead of trying to days for them. On to the music. I got to go for my first proper record shop yesterday for the first time since before christmas, and amongst the collection of records in Oxfam Canterbury I picked out Volumes 1 and 2 of Stars on 45, something I was familiar with but not clued up on. The first clue something is up when you take a look at the track listing and see around 20 Beatles songs on one side of vinyl. Wikipedia explains:

'The band, which consisted solely of studio session musicians under the direction of Jaap Eggermont, formerly of Golden Earring, popularized the medley, by recreating hit songs as faithfully as possible and stringing them together, with a common tempo and relentless underlying drum track. The point was to provide a danceable disco record which used familiar tunes'.

Of the medleys I prefer the extended ABBA one the most. Enjoy.

Day 5 - Love Hangover - Diana Ross

So over the course of my hectic weekend I managed to miss several days, let's see if I can make them back this evening. This number starts off very soul-infused, but really steps up the funk and gets in to one groovy rhythm as Diana Ross repetitious melodies fly around the mix. A well deserved fourth number one for Ms Ross. Enjoy.

Day 4 - Outa-Space - Billy Preston

Continuing on from yesterday's instrumental track today's groove-a-tronic number also doesn't feature any lyrics, and instead relies on one groovy clavinet being ran through a wah wah pedal. Whilst the artist may be better known for being a session musician for the likes of Ray Charles, Little Richard, and most famously The Beatles, he was a recording artist in his own right as this track proves.

Day 3 - Love's Theme - The Love Unlimited Orchestra

Day 3 sees us looking again at the early days of the disco vibe, and one of the real funkalicious tunes that came from that era was this little gem written by Barry White. In the early 70s White worked as a producer, and as he was about to start a highly successful solo career he put together The Love Unlimited Orchestra as a backing band for Love Unlimited. This song became another of the very first disco hits and indeed went to number one in the US.

Day 2 - A Fifth of Beethoven - Walter Murphy

In keeping with yesterday's debut post referencing an artist that really got me in to funky-swinging-disco-beats today's choice is a song that many people will recognise and has often been used as a go to 70s tune. Indeed it is one of the many boogy anthems that will be cropping up from the multi-million selling soundtrack to the film Saturday Night Fever. The video below is the extended version. Enjoy.

Day 1 - Never can say goodbye - Gloria Gaynor

It is so very apt that we start with the following song - not only was the very first disco number one, the artist takes a lot of credit for getting me into disco, and would go on to become one of the defining voices of the disco era. Originally sung by the Jackson Five this version is arguably better and more well known, but it's certainly is a lot more well known.

Greetings traveller

Welcome to my brand spanking new blog. Elsewhere I have a photography-based urban exploring blog and a film blog. This is my first foray into the world of the music blog. I will be trying to post a tune from a bygone era (specifically the 60s-70s) for the next year.

The rules:

1. The tune must inspire others to groove, funk, or even boogey.
2. The tune should be from the 1960s or 1970s, although exceptionally hip tunes from other eras may be allowed at Disco Pete's discression.
3. I must have the tune on vinyl.

The format of the blogs to come will be something like this:

Pre-amble introducing the tune.
Artist
Song title
Year
The vinyl that I found it on
Youtube video

Normally with my blogs I update occasionally and when relevant, so hopefully this will be different.

I hope you enjoy, and we can take this funkadelic journey together.
